Troubleshoot Laptop Memory

Laptop memory is one of the easiest components to upgrade or replace. It is also one of the least expensive of computer components. While computer memory is generally very reliable, there will be times when it will go bad. The memory in any computer is subject to damage from various fronts. Temperature, static electricity and simple age can destroy memory. One may also find that memory they've purchased for their laptop may not perform as expected. Troubleshooting whether or not memory is the problem is usually very easy. Whether or not it is merited to test the memory depends on a few factors.

Most memory problems will cause a hang-up at boot. Computers run a self-test when they're first turned on to make certain that all the necessary components are present and functioning. They also search for new devices when they start up and test them. If a computer suddenly fails to boot and the memory is the culprit, there will oftentimes be a message displayed that asks the user to examine the memory. There may also be error messages given that are unreadable by anyone but techs. Memory may also simply prevent the computer from starting.

There are certain circumstances that may have caused memory to malfunction. Overheating incidents may affect the memory. Incidents where the computer is subjected to shock from a bump or a drop may also affect the memory. Troubleshoot laptop memory by removing the access panel. While the memory may look correctly seated in the sockets, remove it and reseat it to be sure. If the computer fails to boot after this, remove first one piece of RAM and then the other. If removing either allows the computer to function properly, that RAM is likely the culprit. If it makes no difference whether the memory is installed or not, look elsewhere.

Laptop memory is usually very inexpensive, excepting for very high-capacity and high-speed types. It's so easy to replace that, if the memory in a laptop seems like it might be getting old or not performing up to standards, it's usually worth it to replace it. The computer will generally feel faster all around once more memory is installed in the machine. It will also extend the life of the computer when memory is installed. Newer programs almost always require more memory than older ones and replacing the memory is somewhat inevitable.
